ABSTRACT

The Cordyceps genus is a group of ascomycete parasitic fungi, and all known species of this genus are endoparasites; they mainly feed on insects or arthropods and a few feed on other fungi. Fungi of this genus have evolved highly specific and complex mechanisms to escape their host's immune system and coordinate their life cycle coefficients with those of their hosts for survival and reproduction; this mechanism has led to the production of distinctive metabolites in response to the host's defenses. Herein, we review approximately 131 metabolites discovered in the genus Cordyceps (including mycelium, fruiting bodies and fungal complexes) in the past 15 years, which can be used as an important source for new drug research and development. We summarize chemical structures, bioactivity and the potential application of these natural metabolites. We have excluded some reports that originally belonged to Cordyceps, but whose taxonomic attribution is no longer the Cordyceps genus. This can and will serve as a resource for drug discovery.

ABSTRACT

The global COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has resulted in an unprecedented economic and societal impact. Developing simple and accurate testing methods for point-of-care (POC) diagnosis is crucial not only for the control of COVID-19, but also for better response to similar outbreaks in the future. In this work, we present a novel proof-of-concept of a microfluidic microwave sensing method for POC diagnosis of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This method relies on the antibody immobilized on the microwave sensor to selectively capture and concentrate the SARS-CoV-2 antigen or virus present in a buffer solution flowing through the sensor region in a microchannel. The capturing of the SARS-CoV-2 antigen or virus results in a change in the permittivity of the medium near the sensor region reflected by the resonance frequency shift which is used for detection. The use of microchannels offers precise control of the sample volume and the continuous flow nature also offers the potential to monitor the dynamic capturing process. The microwave-microfluidic device shows a good sensitivity of 0.1 ng ml-1 for the SARS-CoV-2 antigen and 4000 copies per ml for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The resonance frequency shift presents a linear relationship with the logarithm of antigen or virus concentration, respectively. This detection method is able to distinguish SARS-CoV-2 from the antigen of human CD4 and two human coronaviruses (MERS and HKU1), which presents a new pathway towards POC diagnosis of the COVID-19 at the community level. It presents the potential to detect other viruses by functionalizing the microwave sensor with respective antibodies.

ABSTRACT

In the context of the economic situation, international relations, and the consequences of COVID-19, the future competition pattern of crude oil trade is uncertain. In this paper, the crude oil international import competition and export competition networks are based on a complex network model. The link prediction method is used to construct a crude oil competition relationship prediction model. We summarize the evolving characteristics of the competitive landscape of the global crude oil trade from 2000 to 2019 and explore the reasons for the changes. Finally, we forecast the future potential crude oil import and export competition. The results indicate the following. (1) The crude oil import competition center is transferred from Europe and America to the Asia–Pacific region and it may continue to shift to developing regions. (2) At present, the competition among traditional crude oil exporters is the core of crude oil export competition, such as OPEC, Canada, and Russia. The United States has become the world's largest crude oil exporter, which means that the core of crude oil export competition has begun to shift to emerging countries. The competition intensity of emerging crude oil exporters is gradually increasing. There is likely to be fierce export competition between traditional and emerging exporters. (3) In the future crude oil competition, we should pay attention to the trend of the United States, which may lead to the restructuring of the global oil trade pattern. Finally, this paper considers the exporters and importers and puts forward policy suggestions for policymakers to deal with the future global crude oil trade competition.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has had a massive impact on individuals globally. The Chinese government has formulated effective response measures, and medical personnel have been actively responding to challenges associated with the epidemic prevention and control strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the implementation of a care transition pathway on patients that underwent joint replacement during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was designed to evaluate the effect of implementing a care transition pathway for patients who underwent joint replacement during the COVID-19 pandemic in the orthopedic department of a tertiary care hospital in Beijing, China. Using a convenient sampling method, a total of 96 patients were selected. Of these, 51 patients who had undergone joint replacement in 2019 and received treatment via the routine nursing path were included in the control group. The remaining 45 patients who underwent joint replacement during the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020 and received therapy via the care transition pathway due to the implementation of epidemic prevention and control measures were included in the observation group. The quality of care transition was assessed by the Care Transition Measure (CTM), and patients were followed up 1 week after discharge. RESULTS: The observation group was determined to have better general self-care preparation, written planning materials, doctor-patient communication, health monitoring, and quality of care transition than the control group. CONCLUSIONS: A care transition pathway was developed to provide patients with care while transitioning through periods of treatment. It improved the patient perceptions of nursing quality. The COVID-19 pandemic is a huge challenge for health professionals, but we have the ability to improve features of workflows to provide the best possible patient care.
